Kamal Rashid Khan, also known as KRK, is indeed a happy man. His small time film DESH DROHI that made big news a couple of months due to it’s ’supposedly’ explosive theme and treatment is continuing to be in news this New Year as well. While the biggest of the film disappear within four weeks of making their money, DESH DROHI is ensuring that even amidst high profile releases like CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA, RAAZ - THE MYSTERY CONTINUES, LUCK BY CHANCE and VICTORY, it makes it’s presence felt. And that’s because the ban on DESH DROHI has been removed by High Court of Mumbai.
A Jagdish Sharma directed film; DESH DROHI was banned by the Maharshrtra state government for 60 days under the Bombay Cinema Regulation Act. This was because there were accusations that the movie was cashing in on the prevailing anti immigrant sentiments in Maharashtra. At that time, the head of Mumbai office of Central Board of Film Certification had opined that the movie had scenes that were derogatory to a particular community. Even Maharashtra Navnirman Sena had expressed their protests against the movie while the Mumbai police had served a notice for a special screening to find any objectionable content that might trigger unrest.
Due to the protests and problems with exhibitors, the release date of the movie was under immense trouble as first it was postponed by a week from 7th to 14th November and in addition it was also banned for release in Maharashtra. In the meantime, the producer of the movie had petitioned the Bombay High Court to lift the ban on the movie.
However, all is well for Kamal R Khan as not just has the ban been lifted from his film, even Section 6 (which resulted in the ban) has been scrapped. This section allowed the State Government to ban a film. But now as per this historical judgment for the whole film industry, in future no film can be banned by State Government. With the judgment in their favor, the makers of the film have intensified the release plans for the film and would now be bringing it on 23th Jan 2009 in Maharashtra, the day that also sees the release of RAAZ - THE MYSTERY CONTINUES and SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE.
