Nandana Sen Madhu Mantena Love story | Marriage Plans

January 17th, 2009

Ghajini producer Madhu Mantena is keen on marrying Nandana Sen but she's not saying yes. To convince her, Madhu has now decided to rope in the support of Nandana's parents.

On Wednesday, Madhu flew to Kolkata with Nandana for the latter's mom's (writer Nabanita Deb Sen) birthday.

"I'm here with Nandana's mother having Bengali fish curry with rice," said the Andhraite who's willing to get as Bengali as he can to convince Nandana of his marital intentions.

Now Madhu is ready to go further to Massachusetts where Nandana's father, Nobel laureate, Prof Amartya Sen teaches Economics and Philo-sophy at Harvard University.

Like Shah Rukh Khan pampering and wooing Kajol's father in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Madhu intends to pull out all stops to win over his future father-in-law.

Laughs Madhu, "You make it sound so dramatic. It's not as though I haven't met Nandana's parents before, or don't know them well. But yes, I did visit Nandana's mother with her this week as it was her birthday.

And I'm going to make time during my Boston shoot (for Abbas Tyrewalla's Love-1-800) to spend time with her father."

Here's one love story in B-town that's dying for a happy ending. If only the lady relents.

Back to the South

January 17th, 2009

After a series of flops in Bollywood, and with not many fresh offers to boot, Shriya Saran has slowly wafted down south again. The actress now understands that she needs to be doing well in Bollywood if she needs to hike her price her. On the other hand, Asin’s “Ghajini” has done well and she is now much sought after and has films with Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar coming up.

Identity Crunch

January 17th, 2009

The bouncers working in the different nightclubs in the United States need to be given a crash course in Bollywood films if these kinds of incidents should not happen again.

You know what? Two guys guarding a swanky night club in New York did not allow our beloved stars John Abraham and Katrina Kaif inside. What happened was that John and the flawless beauty went to the night club after a crewmember of the flick 'New York' invited them there to celebrate his birthday.

Kabir Khan, the director, Katrina and John went together and when they were about to enter the club, the guys stopped them. All explanations by the two stars regarding their status in India and they being famous film stars did not reach anywhere.

And what did the two stars receive back after trying to teach the bouncers their history?

Only a brief gaze followed by the need to see the Identity cards.

Now the problem was that the two actors and the director had their ID cards back in their hotel rooms. That fact did not deter the three who badly wanted to wash off their stress after a tiresome day. But by the time our victims reached back to the night club, the party had almost reached its finishing line.

May be once in a while these kinds of shock treatments are good to keep our over loved and hyped film stars to stay grounded.

What do you say?

SRK, Sachin, Akshay's LIC secret

January 17th, 2009

Real estate as investment is a thing of the past. We all know of how Bollywood stars are securing their future by purchasing flats and farmhouses around the town and countryside.

Shah Rukh is said to be creating another 'Mannat' in Dubai too.

But here's a recent development we got to know of. As it seems Shahrukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar are investing heavily in the of Life Insurance Corporation of India!

The government-run insurance company, the largest in the country, came up with a particular scheme that has got all the stars hooked on.

Our source tells us that the scheme ensures a guaranteed rate of returns.

"Moreover, it also carries a risk cover six times the maturity sum assured in the first year. In the subsequent years, it becomes two times the maturity sum because the scheme guarantees a certain percentage of income every year. Now here's the best part – the interest earned on this investment is totally tax-free," says the source.

Clearly our market savvy stars would be fools to let go of such a wonderful scheme to multiply their money. So when their financial advisors came to them with the idea, Shah Rukh, Saif and Akshay promptly jumped at it.

So just how much have these men invested?

If rumours floating in the market are to be believed, Shahrukh Khan has invested Rs 8 crore. Not to be left behind Akshay Kumar too invested the same amount as the Khan and Saif Ali Khan is said to have invested Rs 7 crore. The policy of the stars will mature in 10 years.

But the man who has invested the most is a certain Sachin Tendulkar who has about Rs 18 crore locked in the scheme.

So if SRK has invested Rs 8 crore for 10 years, he is guaranteed of a minimum return of approx Rs 16 crore, plus a loyalty addition of 40 lakh. You can easily do the math for the rest of the stars.

A top development officer of Life Insurance Corporation of India confirmed the news for us on condition of anonymity.

"It is true that Shah Rukh, Saif and Akshay have invested in our recently launched scheme but revealing more details about it would not be fair to my investors and will also be unethical," he told us.

A leading accountant who handles most of the stars' account also told us, "Our stars may be earning big money from their films but then it is natural for them like everybody to put their money in the right ventures to ensure safer returns. They had been making big investments in the share market and the realty market but presently they are facing heavy losses on that front. This big assured returns government scheme is the right scheme to invest big money in for these three stars. They have taken the right decision at the right time as LIC is presently contemplating stopping this scheme due to over-subscription."

Katrina Kaif And Priyanka Chopra Got Into A Catfight At Star Screen Awards

January 17th, 2009

Seems like there was a huge cat fight brewing behind the scenes of the Star Screen Awards show in Mumbai! Well, five divas of Bollywood were all set to perform throughout the award show, including, Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor and Bipasha Basu. Kareena Kapoor was all set to perform the grand finale, but at the last moment backed out. So to fill in the time gap, Arjun Rampal was roped in to perform a sequence from 'Rock On!!!' earlier in the night which would be followed by the remaining four girls.

So where did the cat fight come in? Well it seems Priyanka Chopra was chosen by organizers to perform the grand finale, but when Katrina Kaif got wind of it, she insisted that she do the finale act instead! Well it seems Priyanka Chopra had already rehearsed the act and was all set to go and was not about to let someone take her place and a heated argument took place between the beauties behind the scenes! Meow!!! For a while organizers were unsure of what would happen at the show! Well it seems like Priyanka Chopra turned out to be the bigger person in this, as she graciously relented and let Katrina Kaif perform the finale. Organizers thanked her profusely for being the bigger person and saving the show from disaster.

Phew! Who knew Katrina Kaif would throw a tantrum over something as trivial as an award show lineup! Thank goodness Priyanka Chopra relented otherwise who knows what could've happened. Some are saying it has something to do with the not so great rapport that Kat's man Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra share. Either way it sounds pretty childish on Katrina Kaif's part. What do you think? Was Katrina Kaif in the wrong, or did she have the right to demand to be the grand finale act? Drop us a comment and let us know what you think!

Akshay Kumar heads west

January 17th, 2009

Bollywood star talks about his first Hollywood release.

Crave Online: How did this movie come together for you?

Akshay Kumar: Sometimes you just see a poster and you start liking it. There was no script at all. This guy comes with a poster and he got my photograph maybe from the net or something, and maybe one or two samurais and said okay. Then after that we hit upon the idea of making Chandni Chwok to China. I used my star power.

Crave Online: What's harder, dancing or fighting?

Akshay Kumar: Dancing. Dancing is very hard because I've trained myself in martial arts. So to do fighting is a little bit easier than dancing. Dancing, I can't dance to help myself. When I dance, it looks as if I'm fighting, so it's more like aerobics and things of that sort.

Crave Online: Do you see a similarity, doing both for movies?

Akshay Kumar: Well, I've enjoyed doing that and fortunately for this movie, they both combine very well.

Crave Online: What was it like shooting on the Great Wall of China?

Akshay Kumar: We were lucky enough to get it [a permit] actually. We were very lucky and we finished 15 days' work in seven days because we only had seven days permission. And the camera man gets upset all the time because it's sunny, it's raining, so he's so annoyed with the whole thing.

Crave Online: How about working with Gordon Liu?

Akshay Kumar: He's the master killer. Looking at 36th Chamber of Shaolin, okay. I used to be there with my friends creating chambers in my house where they had this box full of sand. We used to heat it up and put our hands inside, burn it off at the same time. There were other kinds of exercises. Have you all seen the film or am I just talking? Okay, it's a must film.

Crave Online: What did it mean to you to do martial arts with the master?

Akshay Kumar: It meant a great deal. I can't imagine in my life that something like this would happen. See, I was a waiter and a cook working in Thailand and I had three favorite people. I had three posters behind where I was working. One was Sri Devi, that's an Indian actress, a very big actress. Then I had Sylvester Stallone and then I had the 36th Chamber of Shaolin photograph. I used to just work there. The surprise of my life, how life could change, I have worked with all three of them. I'm so shocked at how things have changed. When he told me about it, I was absolutely [shocked]. I just sometimes keep on thinking, why didn't I keep more posters? So many other things also. Maybe that was a very magical wall.

Crave Online: Are there parallels between the movie and your life?

Akshay Kumar: Well, the character is the same. I play a waiter, a cook. Then how he goes to China to learn martial arts. So the characterization is the same. The script is different.

Crave Online: Will this be a trendsetter for martial arts in Bollywood?

Akshay Kumar: Yes, why not? It is going to. We had to come up with something different. Yeah, I'm sure you've never seen the first Bollywood kung fu film. People are going to like this combination or not like it. I have no idea.

Crave Online: What was it like choreographing the fight scenes with the wirework?

Akshay Kumar: Well, I've done all of that but never with Chinese guys. I thought I was very good at martial arts. I thought I was very good at cable work and all until I met these guys. And I found myself very slow in front of them. I broke my back by the way doing the cable work. I have a slipped disc problem because of that now.

Crave Online: How did you break your back?

Akshay Kumar: There was some cable work I was doing. I already had a slipped disc. That was about eight years back so it just came back.

Crave Online: Were you out of shooting?

Akshay Kumar: No, not at all.

Crave Online: What attracted you to martial arts?

Akshay Kumar: Sir Gordon Liu's movies. 36th Chamber of Shaolin.

Crave Online: what's your favorite?

Akshay Kumar: That's my favorite kung fu movie.

Crave Online: Are you exhausted doing 5-6 movies a year?
Akshay Kumar: I'm slowing down actually.
Crave Online: What movies did you watch to prepare?

Akshay Kumar: All the same films because they come in different names. It's the same film but comes in different names.

Crave Online: How many martial arts do you have?

Akshay Kumar: In my house? 300, 400.

Crave Online: Do you identify more with the loser or the hero?

Akshay Kumar: I have been both. You won't believe, I've done 120 films by now in 18 years of my career. 70 of them are flops, so I've played both.

Crave Online: Where does this movie rank?

Akshay Kumar: I rank this film as my best film.

Crave Online: How was your experience with Hollywood on this film?

Akshay Kumar: We just got everything, whatever we wanted. It's an honor working with them. I was actually, six months back, I was shooting in LA for a month. For 45 days I was here shooting. I finished a whole film, Kambakkht Ishq, at Universal Studios. That was great. It's all so organized. We learned quite a lot from here when we go back home. We try to put it back in Bollywood. Like I've taken a call sheet back home and I've showed them, "Let's make a call sheet like this."

Crave Online: Now that you've worked with Sylvester Stallone and Gordon Liu, who else do you want to work with?

Akshay Kumar: I'm going back to my magic wall and putting some more posters up. I'd rather not say and I'll just put a poster there quietly.

Crave Online: What about working with Deepika Padukone, a relative newcomer?

Akshay Kumar: I've not worked with her before. She just came into this industry about two years back. Her third film is this, didn't know anything about martial arts but she practiced for five months, practiced so much. You all have seen it, she's done a brilliant job.

Wishing Javed Akhtar a very happy Birthday

January 17th, 2009

If Goddess Saraswati is called as the 'Goddess of Education', then, our today's Birthday boy can be aptly called as the 'Lord of the Poetry'. No prizes for guessing as to we are talking about the one and only ageless wonder of the literary world as well as Bollywood…Shri. Javed Akhtar, who celebrates his birthday today.

Javed is one of the very few people in the tinsel town who has been immensely successful in multiple fields of work, including script writing, lyrics, poetry and also judging singing talents. A sample of his work can be seen in exemplary Bollywood classics like Zanjeer, Deewar, Sholay, Haathi Mera Saathi, Seeta Aur Geeta, Don, Trishul …to say the least. While on one hand, Javed was hugely responsible for giving Big B his on-screen Angry Young Man image, on the other, Javed is equally responsible for giving Bollywood it's much acclaimed all-rounder in the form of his very own son Farhan Akhtar, who is already 'Rocking' his way to the top. True to the saying, 'Like Father, Like Son', Farhan too, has been by and large successful in becoming the Master of all trades!

We wish Javed Akhtar, the eternal pride of Bollywood, a very happy Birthday.

Naseer's cameo in Prakash Jha's Rajniti

January 17th, 2009

Though this year Naseeruddin Shah has decided to cut down on his film assignments drastically, the one film that he has agreed to do is Prakash Jha's Rajniti. And that too a cameo in a Ranbir Kapoor-Katrina Kaif starrer.

Naseer has been doing a series of cameos in the last two years including such unlikely ones as Priyadarshan's Mere Baap Pehle Aap which says Naseer, he did to work with the prolific Priyan for the first time.

Likewise this would be the first time that Naseer would be working with Prakash Jha. Most surprising of all Naseer agreed to the role without hearing what his role was. "I trust Prakash Jha," says Naseer simply.

Adds Prakash Jha, "It's true. Naseer didn't ask me anything about his role in Rajniti. He just said yes. He plays a powerful leftist leader of a people's movement."

Kareena to build special school

January 17th, 2009

It was a dream project of Raj Kapoor, and granddaughter Kareena Kapoor has taken the onus on her shoulders to turn it into a reality.

The actor is currently hunting for a prime plot to construct a school for special children. This is the first time that a reigning Bollywood star is constructing such a school and will be built in Mumbai without any aid from the government or an NGO.

Though Kareena might accept technical and expert support from NGOs working in this field, she plans to build the school with her own money. Sister Karisma is also pulling in her resources to help Kareena lick this project into shape.

According to sources, "Kareena and Karisma want the school to come up in the next couple of years but it all depends on how fast they are able to zero in on the land. She needs a couple of acres in a good location. She is determined to put in as much money as it takes. She has set aside Rs15 crore for the land."

Kareena has been talking about "this dream" of hers after watching Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par but she has never spoken about it publicly. She had earlier evinced an interest in a Yoga training centre but now wants to put all those plans on hold for this school.

"It's true that I want to build a school for special children. I also want to have something for underprivileged children as well. I can't go into details yet as there is a lot of work that needs to be done on this front," says Kareena.

In all probability, the school will be named after Raj Kapoor.

Fiery J&K leader spits fire at Bips

January 17th, 2009

Bipasha Basu’s controversial role in Rahul Dholakia’s upcoming film Lamhaa continues to be under fire.

The actress plays the role of Aasiya Andrabi, chairperson of Dukhtaran-e-Milat — a Kashmiri separatist outfit for women — in the film.

Andrabi had earlier threatened to take the film to court over the depiction of her character in the film.

Now, she has attacked Bipasha directly, making it clear that she is unhappy with the actress chosen for her character.

“Bipasha is considered one of the worst Bollywood actresses. She can’t play my character,” Andrabi said.

Andrabi subsequently served a legal notice on Dholakia as well as Bunty Walia’s GS Entertainment, the producer of Lamhaa.

According to the notice: “Aasiya, who is a political personality and follower of Islam, doesn’t want to be portrayed by any actress who is incompatible with her virtues.” The makers of Lamhaa have been given three days to reply and furnish the full script of the film to Andrabi. The politician has reportedly said Dholakia had promised to discuss the film in detail with her before beginning its shoot. Andrabi has alleged that Dholakia never met her.

Dholakia, on his part, said he hasn’t received any legal notice.

He insisted Bipasha’s character was not connected with Andrabi.

“There are no real characters in the film,” he said. “I have made them fictitious so that no sentiments are hurt.” The Parzania director said it wasn’t easy to change the characters from real to fictitious.

“People have become more sensitive after the 26/ 11 attack. I don’t want to take any risks,” said Dholakia, who clarifies his film is entirely pro- Kashmir.

Bipasha landed in controversy after she signed Lamhaa. She had to leave Kashmir while shooting for the film, fearing mob violence.

“I’m not going to risk my life for a film. Who comes to hold your hand when you’re in pain?” the actress said, adding her family and friends were worried about her.

Andrabi had earlier threatened to take legal action for portraying her life in the film.

“If I find any such scene in the film, I will not desist from taking legal action against the producer,” Andrabi had said.

Bips, on the other hand, returned to the Valley on Wednesday to shoot for the film, almost two months after leaving the place.

Gauri and I have a very brotherly-sisterly relationship: Shah Rukh

January 17th, 2009

We’ve always been interested in knowing Bollywood love stories, haven’t we? Guess, it is time to unravel an untold anecdote right out of ‘King of Romance’ Shah Rukh Khan’s life.

The story goes like this- ‘Mujhe bhi apna bhai samjho,’ were the first words that Shah Rukh mouthed when he met his wife Gauri. In an exclusive chitchat with Farhan Akhtar on his show ‘Oye It’s Friday’, SRK said “I first met Gauri when I was 18 years old. I started very late, unlike Hrithik who started at the age of 12. I was very shy of girls that time. I still am. I saw Gauri dancing with a boy and asked my friend to ask her if she would dance with me. He went and asked her but she said, ‘No, I am waiting for my boyfriend.’ I had a heartbreak thinking I’ve lost her. But later on I realised that it was actually her brother and she lied to everyone so that no one comes and asks her to dance with them.”

“Later on, I called her one-day and told her ‘Mujhe bhi apna bhai samjho’. The moment I said that, she was ready to marry me. Gauri and I have a very brotherly-sisterly relationship,” he joked.

While the statement can very well throw a few chills down a lot of spines if not understood correctly, we have to accept the fact that only SRK can take such liberty without offending anyone. Bravo!

For Vijay fans only

January 17th, 2009

Alternating between fights and dance numbers, is weaved in a story of a son’s vendetta, against the men who had killed his father, an army major, and falsely branded him a traitor.

A remake of the Hindi film Soldier, Prabhudeva while almost faithfully following the major incidents of the earlier version, has made slight changes, and tailored it to suit Vijay’s image. So, Vijay gets to do all that he had done in his earlier films.

Including those cute little comic expressions and antics, that should go well with his fans. The songs are peppy and catchy in their picturisation. It has a sleeker, glossier style than the earlier version, with Ravi Varman’s camera contributing to the stylised look.

Vijay’s is a dual role. That of Pugazh, the youth who plans an elaborate trap to get at his father’s killers. And of pugazh’s father Major Saravanan, who had twenty years earlier been killed by his colleagues when he had caught them smuggling out army weapons. The difference between the duo is probably the length of their moustache.

Anyway, it being a Vijay-flick, it’s unreasonable to expect more variations! As for Nayantara, who plays his lady love, oblivious of his real motive in wooing her, consistency seems to be her hallmark. For, the actress sports the same look, that she had done in her recent films.

Playing the baddies, JD, Shaan, and Raku, are Prakashraj, Adithya and Devaraj respectively. There is a bit of a play on a disc that could have incriminated JD. And which Pugazh uses to create misunderstanding among them. There is just that much that a comic actor can do to raise laughs. Poor Vadivelu goes around for the most part in a weird hair-do, being mistaken for an ape, and looking quite lost, as he tries desperately to raise some laughs.

Villu is a typical Vijay-flick, and strictly for his fans.

'I'm a successful actor'

January 17th, 2009

One would have expected Sanjay Kapoor to be somewhat reserved, perhaps even standoffish. It's probably something to do with his roles – the shy guy in Sirf Tum or the obsessive husband of Esha Deol in Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe.

About five minutes into a telephonic conversation though reveals a side of him you cannot help but smile at. His words reveal a certain naiveté.

"I'm a successful actor," he says with a conviction that doesn't make you want to contradict him.

Sanjay who will make a comeback of sorts as an actor with Luck By Chance, is currently busy with his home production, significantly called It's My Life.

Edited excerpts from a conversation:

It's been a while since we've seen you on screen…

It was a conscious decision. I am currently producing a film called It's My Life starring Harman Baweja, Nana Patekar and Ganelia. I plan to release it this summer.

So what made you take up Luck By Chance then?

My close friends believe that I have a good sense of humour. And Zoya was quite keen on casting me in the film. I guess things just fell in place. I am also working in a film being produced by Tips and another one called Kircket, which is a satire on the business of sports.

How do you look at your career considering most of your films didn't fare too well at the box office?

Success is relative. Not everyone can become a Shahrukh Khan. And you certainly cannot always gauge it by the box office collections. I know there may be 10 actors ahead of me. But I am also aware that there are possibly a million others behind me too. So it's how you look at the glass – half full or half empty!

So you consider yourself to be a successful actor?

Yes, I think I am a successful actor. There would be many who would want to be in my shoes right now. There is always room for improvement.

'Maska' hits jackpot

January 17th, 2009

Maska' has opened to a terrific response all over Andhra Pradesh. The Ram starrer, directed by B.Gopal has collected a share of Rs 2.5 crore in the opening day itself.
It seems, the film is on the way to repeat the B.O. success of Ram Gopal duo’s 'Ready', released on last Sankrati. 'Maska' has the energetic young star dancing and fighting at his best. The leading ladies of the movie, Sheela and Hansika Motwani, sizzle in song sequences.
The film, in the absence of strong competition, will go the distance, say industry watchers. The film has been released with 275 prints all over Andhra Pradesh.

My work is my life: Bipasha

January 18th, 2009

Back in Srinagar to shoot for 'Lamhaa', Bipasha Basu says that she’s not going to risk her life for a film. This is what the dusky beauty saysabout the issue.

“Too much was made out of the whole thing (when Bips left the schedule in Srinagar earlier). Lamhaa is a difficult film. There was bound to be ups and downs. The producer and director knew why I left. A certain amount of security was promised. The first seven days were absolute chaos – nothing was organised and there was a lack of security,” she said.

“Yes, my work is my life. But then, I’ve a life beyond work. I’m not going to risk my life unnecessarily for any film. Who comes to hold your hand when you’re in pain? Let’s be optimistic,” she added.

She said, “This time, hopefully, we’ll shoot without any trouble. Let’s be sensible about it. Lamhaa is a sensible film and it would be difficult for audiences to follow (the language and behaviour of the local Kashmiri girls, which she’d planned to learn earlier). At the end of the day, we’re making a commercial film.”

“I love working with Rahul Dholakia (the director of Lamhaa ). He’s fun and funny. We’ve a strange equation. He looked at me at the start and asked if I am a method actor. I liked that. It showed the director had enough respect in me to first find out what kind of an actress I am,” she added.

Kat grooves for the King!

January 18th, 2009

Looks like the King of Bollywood can’t do without hisQueen.

We are talking about Akshay Kumar and his lucky mascot Katrina Kaif. After giving a string of hits, the jodi will be seen together once again. Katrina has agreed to shoot for a special number for the Akshay-starrer Blue .

The song will be shot on a whopping Rs 6 crore budget and in Mumbai soon. According to a unit member, “Katrina has agreed to do the song only for Akshay’s sake. She genuinely did not have the dates to accommodate another film. But Akshay considers Katrina to be lucky and the two get along very well. So, the actress agreed.”

We hear Katrina has been rehearsing for the song and will have to do double shifts to complete it. But she doesn’t mind it. And, looks like Akshay could do with a little luck after his dismal opening with CCTC last week.

Akki’s award goes to Aamir

January 18th, 2009

Akshay refused to accept apopular award, suggested it be given to Aamir.

After all the drama and exchange of annoyance that took place on stage of an award ceremony recently, it was Akshay Kumar, who saved the show with his kindheartedness. The actor took many by surprise when he refused to accept ‘The Most Popular Actor’ award saying that not him, but Aamir Khan deserved the award for his work in Ghajini.

Our sources say, “Akshay Kumar saw Ghajini in New York when he was there for the premiere of Chandni Chowk to China and was floored by Aamir’s performance and effort. On his return to India from London, Akshay saw Singh Is Kinng in the flight and thought that Aamir’s effort was far more commendable.

Receiving the award Akshay said, “I feel humble that I have won the award for ‘The Most Popular Actor’. I have waited for this award since a long time. However, I recently saw Ghajini and thought that Aamir deserves this award more. I know that Aamir does not accept awards, but I want him to accept this as a symbol of love that people have for him. I want him to enjoy the award as much as I would have done.”

When contacted Akshay Kumar said, “I did something that I genuinely felt. I really do not wish to talk about it.”
