Where’s Priya?

February 13th, 2009

As Sanjay and Manyata Dutt threw a big bash on Tuesday night — the eve of their first wedding anniversary, the who’s who of Bollywood came together at the Dutt residence in Mumbai’s Pali Hill. However, his sisters chose to stay away. When asked about Priya Dutt, who has been involved in a public war of words with brother Sanjay lately, a guest at the party said, “No, Priya was not present.”

Manyata, who eluded the cameras, “looked stunning in an emerald green and red sari and wore beautiful jewellery to match”, says ‘good friend’ Ameesha Patel. “The party was very well attended. The food was great and the décor was elegant. They were superb hosts and the party rocked,” she added.

The guest list also included Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Farah Khan, Suneil Shetty, Ayesha Takia, Aftab Shivdasani, among others. “The party was wonderful. Sanjay and Manyata make a truly wonderful couple,” said actress Sophie Chaudhary, Manyata’s close friend.

Three crore van for Sanjay Dutt’s election campaigning

Samajwadi party is leaving no stone unturned for their star candidate Sanjay Dutt’s campaign plans. They have arranged an extremely luxurious bus worth a whopping Rs. 3 crore for him to travel around Lucknow for campaigning in his constituency.

A source reveals, “Since the Loksabha elections are taking place close the summer season, and Dutt has to campaign through the whole of Lucknow and its adjoining areas, it was necessary that he would do so in the most comfortable way. It is his first election and it would end up being very tiresome for him. Therefore a Rs. 3 crore luxury Volvo caravan fully equipped with a shower and a toilet is being readied for him. This luxury cruise caravan is being built on an original Volvo chassis and is complete with all the comforts of a home.”

Revealing more about the luxurious caravan van the source further added, “The front section will have an office lounge. The central section will have a bar and a setup which will house many DVDs, a play station and computers. The bus has been designed by D. C. Designs Pvt. Ltd. under Dutt’s guidance and took nine months in the making. It will be delivered to Sanjay very soon.”

Sanju creates ruckus

February 12th, 2009

A lady who lives in the same building as Sanjay Dutt was noticeably irritated with the commotion during the actor's wedding anniversary bash.

Lately, actors and their late night parties have caused enough trouble. After irate neighbours complained to the police about too much noise during Preity Zinta and Hrithik Roshan's birthday parties in January, it was Sanjay Dutt's turn on the night of February 10. Sanjay and Manyata Dutt had to face one of their building resident's ire while a lavish party to celebrate their first wedding anniversary was on in full swing at their Pali Hill residence on Tuesday night.

A middle-aged lady who resides on the first floor of the same building as Sanju created quite a ruckus about several media persons gathering outside the building. She clearly told all the media persons to immediately leave the vicinity as she was getting disturbed.

Interestingly, Sanjay happened to notice the lady frantically interacting with the media when he came out of the building premises to see off his guests, Abhishek Bachchan and Amar Singh. Sensing that the lady was unable to deftly handle the situation as there was a lot of commotion, Sanjay went up to the lady and politely asked her to calm down.

An onlooker said, “The lady looked very upset but when she saw Sanjay, she immediately calmed down. Things definitely got better after Sanjay spoke to her and politely explained the situation to her.”

Commenting on the incident, Dharam Oberoi, CEO of Sanjay Dutt Productions, said, “The lady is a lawyer. She was getting disturbed due to all the noise outside the building. Everything was eventually sorted out.”

When asked if she had called the policemen who were seen outside the building, Dharam replied, “I don't know anything about that.”

Sanju-Manyata celebrate first marriage anniversary

February 11th, 2009

Mumbai: Bollywood couple Sanjay Dutt and Manyata have celebrated their eventful one-year of marriage at their Mumbai-based Pali Hill residence.

However, sister Priya Dutt was not present on this occasion. It is noteworthy here that Sanjay's family's refusal to accept Manyata caused a rift between him and his sisters.

It's been an eventful year for Sanjay and Manyata Dutt, who got married as per Hindu customs on Feb 11, 2008. The one-year of their marriage was full of events as the duo landed in legal net over the validity of their wedding, which was followed by tiff between Priya and Sanjay Dutt. On the other hand, Sanjay Dutt has launched his own production house after marriage and has kicked off his political career too.

Abhishek Bachchan, Amar Singh, Shatrughan Sinha, Vilasrao Deshmukh and several other celebrities were attended the big bash of their togetherness.

Munnabhai has kicked off his political career from Lucknow Lok Sabah constituency on Samajwadi Party ticket.

The preparations for the party was personally supervised by Manyata.

Sanjay's film out from the cans

February 10th, 2009

When it comes to the project 'Mr. Fraud', the delay and the loss of a couple of crores are not at all bothering the financiers Shri Ashtavinayak Cine Visions.

The film conceptualized by Abbas-Mustan is going to see the day light again after a long break of three years.

'Mr. Fraud' having Sanjay Dutt in the lead role started off and had completed almost 30% when Sanjay got caught up in legal issues leading to the break up of plans.

The producers are now reviving the project as they are very much confident that the flick will click at the box office because of its unique and gripping story.

Now it has been decided that most of the portions which were shot three years back will be shot again as the style of film making has changed and the actors are also looking different now.

'Mr.Fraud' also has Ajay Devgan and Bipasha Basu in the other lead roles.

Sanjay Dutt’s 200 crore film hit by recession

Bunty Walia had plans to make a film on the battle of Saragarhi with Sanjay Dutt but the ongoing recession has put the Rs. 200 crore budgeted film on hold.

According to our sources, Bunty Walia has plans to make the film but right now the time is just not right to put in something as huge as 200 crore on a film. The industry is facing recession and the film requires a lot of man power and money. “But I don’t want to make any compromises and will definitely make the film with Sanjay Dutt in the lead and also get in 20 other big names. Even the director will remain the same that is Rohit Jugraj. I think it will take me another 6-7 months to go ahead with it. But yes as of now the film plans are on hold.” Walia has stated.

Walia is known to be amongst Dutt’s best pals, further added, “Sanjay Dutt too wants to do this film as he is the co-producer of the film. But right now he is managing his work and also planning his political strategy for his Lok Sabha elections so for the time being things are on hold. The shooting will be in Morocco as it will be the perfect location for the war which took place.”

The battle of Saragarhi was fought in 1897 in the bordering areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan which was back then known as the North West Frontier Province. Dutt was to play the Sikh regiment havaldaar called, Ishar Singh in the film which was to have 20 other main lead actors enacting the roles of 20 brave Sikhs who formed the back bone of the regiment and gave a fight till their death.

Sanjay's 'blue' mood affects shooting

February 8th, 2009

Sanjay Dutt is feeling shooting 'blues' these days. The actor is allegedly unhappy over the fact that Akshay Kumar has overshadowed him in the film Blue.

Sanjay Dutt is feeling so low because of this that he has started reporting at 2 pm on the shoots while the shift starts at 9. This has resulted in stretching of the schedule from 80 days to 150 days.

According to a source, initially everything was going well and Sanju and Akki were getting along well before Sanjay started to feel that Akshay is being given more importance because of his commerical viability.

"The entire unit including Akshay Kumar and Lara Dutta were kept waiting every day on the sets while Sanjay Dutt reported late. As this is director Anthony D'souza's first film, he has no say in front of a senior actor like Sanjay," added the source.

But according to reports, Sanjay and Akshay have now agreed to wrap up the final portions of the film by February.

All's well that ends well.

Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha starrer Lamha wraps shoot, release post June

February 2nd, 2009

Mumbai: The shooting of producer Bunty Walia's home production, Lamha directed by Rahul Dholakia is finally complete. The film stars Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu and Kunal Kapoor in the lead roles.

Lamha is a thriller story set in the terrorism of Kashmir. Close to 40 percent of the film has been shot in Kashmir and it was recently in the news for the flack received by locals there which agitated actress Bipasha Basu leading to rumors of she backing out of the film. But contrary to all reports, the film's shooting is now complete.

Walia says, "Lamha's shooting is complete and we are currently working on its editing and post production. I am looking at releasing the film in June- July. But before that in mid-March I will launch a coffee table book, and that is when I will be looking at selling the film's rights to distributors."

The film has been made on a budget of Rs 25- 30 crore and Walia says he is looking at selling the rights for approximately Rs 35 crore. "I want the film to be a hit and I want everyone to make money. There is no point selling it at a high price in such volatile market conditions."

Shahrukh Khan on Twitter?

January 31st, 2009

Twitter.com is a popular messaging service where millions of people send messages through web, SMS and other desktop based applications. Twitter is popular in USA and is gaining popularity in India as well. Recently, 3 bollywood stars Shahrukh Khan, Farhan Akhtar and Sanjay Dutt allegedly created accounts on the social messaging service and started messaging.

Farhan Akhtar and Sanjay Dutt's accounts seem to send automated messages, when a news about each of them is published on the Internet. The alleged Shahrukh Khan's account messages (also known as tweets) are not automated and sent by person. However, all the messages are nothing much but already known information on the web. Unlike Big B's blog, there are no personal and exclusive pictures or information. Some of the tweets are:

Done with the first round of shooting for Name is Khan. Los Angeles (and GG Awards, congrats to Slumdog!) has been a life affirming blast.

Shelved Duhla Mil Gaya & MNIK not kind to the shoulder. Surgery imminent. Still: good to be home. I shall be ready for Billu press junket.

Shouts to everybody who wished 'Ghar Ki Baat Hai' best wishes. NDTV Imagine and Red Chillies proudly filling a void.

Moreover, the background used is a wallpaper from the movie Billu Barber, which is again available publicly. Though "Shahrukh Khan" ackwnoledges that the background is from Billu Barber in another tweet, "@shahpar_selim Absolutely! You may find the background at BilluBarber.com". Ths picture used by that account as the profile picture, is the 6th picture on Google Image Search for "shahrukh khan," which is again available publicly to anyone without much effort. The profile picture is cropped from the picture available on Google Image Search.

We don't think it is the real Shahrukh Khan, but it seems like it could be either a fan or perhaps even an employee at Red Chillies. We are waiting on for a comment on this from Red Chillies as well as Farhan Akhtar. Bollywood fans are hoping to see more of their favorite stars using technology to get connected with their fans. Some well-known people who are using Twitter to their advantage are Barrack Obama, Britney Spears and even Sanjay Leela Bhansali for promoting Saawariya.

Bollywood film roils tensions in Kashmir

January 16th, 2009

SRINAGAR, INDIA // The Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt appeared during the outdoor shooting of Lamha on Srinagar’s landmark Zero Bridge wearing a black-and-white kaffiyeh, given to him by a local photojournalist as a sign of his solidarity with the Palestinian people.

When pictures showing him in the traditional Palestinian headdress appeared in the next day’s local newspapers, Mr Dutt’s act was acclaimed throughout the Kashmir valley, where kaffiyeh-wearing Muslim youths have been holding regular protests over the Israeli assault on Gaza.

It also gave a badly needed boost to the Lamha crew, who have been having trouble filming in the valley amid rumours that the place and its people are being negatively portrayed. Kashmir’s tourism officials, hoping the presence of Bollywood will boost the region’s ailing economy, have looked on anxiously.

In October, following the violent agitation over the local government’s decision to transfer 100 acres of forest to a Hindu consortium, the Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu stormed off the shoot citing a threat made on her life.

Production has been repeatedly disrupted by angry crowds over their perceived misrepresentation of the Kashmiri cause in the film, including one scene during which Kashmiri youths burn used car tyres and chant anti-India slogans. On another occasion, Kashmiri fruit traders, suspecting they were being depicted unfairly, forced the film crew to stop shooting a scene on the premises of the Srinagar Fruit Mandi (market).

The film deals with militancy and its consequences for life in Kashmir.

The film’s producer strongly denied allegations that Kashmiris were being depicted unfairly and the crew, along with Ms Basu and Mr Dutt, returned to the Valley this month to resume work, albeit under tight police protection.

But now, Sayeda Aasiya Andrabi, chief of the radical all-women Dukhtaran-e-Millat (daughters of the faith), has served legal notice to Rahul Dholakia, the film’s director, following reports that Ms Basu is playing her in the film.

Ms Aasiya alleges Mr Dholakia violated an agreement that the script would be shown to her before shooting began. The notice says the DeM leader is a “political leader and firm believer of Islam” and remains “always veiled” and that her portrayal is incompatible with “her virtues and teachings”. It accused the studio, GS Entertainment, of putting her reputation, honour and dignity at stake, which “is irreparable and could not be compensated”.

GS Entertainment has been given three days to reply to the notice and alter the script. Mr Dholakia came out and said Ms Basu’s role in his film “is not even remotely connected with the life of Aasiya Andrabi”.

“I’ve made the script even more fictitious so that it doesn’t hurt anyone’s sentiments.”
Reports had also suggested that Ali Shah Geelani, the hardline Kashmiri separatist leader, was angered at being portrayed in the film.

Mr Dholakia said changing the characters from real to fictitious was a “gruelling task”. He also said that in light of heightened sensitivities following the Mumbai terror attacks, he does want to take risks. “Making and releasing the film is more important,” he told a newspaper.

The furore over Lamha has also worried the state government, particularly its tourism department officials, who fear it could harm their efforts to revive Kashmir’s ailing tourism industry.

They hold that the shooting of Bollywood movies could help revive the local economy, hard hit by the 19-year insurgency.

“Kashmir is as beautiful as before,” said Yash Chopra, a film director who headed a delegation of Bollywood filmmakers and actors to Kashmir a few years ago.
“We’ll again come to shoot in Kashmir.”

Those in the delegation agreed that Kashmir offered natural beauty and cheaper rates for shooting than other locations.

Farooq Ahmed Shah, Kashmir’s director tourism, said: “Regardless of irritants, Bollywood teams will continue to head to Kashmir for outdoor shooting.”

The government wants to remove the perception of danger from the minds of moviemakers and has pledged security and even the provision of helicopters at low rates to take them to locations for shooting.

During the past few years, successive state governments have sent out ministers and other senior functionaries and tour operators to various parts of India to spread the message that Kashmir was ready to receive tourists.

Nazir A Bakshi, the chairman of the Kashmir Chapter of the Travel Association of India, has had detailed discussions with Mr Chopra, the filmmaker, and his comrades, as well as prominent tour operators in Indian cities.

“Luckily, I could convince them how important it was to return to Kashmir,” he said.
Mr Bakshi said the trips have inspired hope that Bollywood filmmakers will return to Kashmir in large numbers, giving much needed impetus to economic activity in the region.

For their part, Kashmiri officials and tour operators are prepared to support filmmakers in every way they can, even if that means protecting them from angry locals.

Bollywood team back in Srinagar to shoot Lamha

January 9th, 2009

Post elections in Kashmir, Bollywood film units have resumed shooting to complete their unfinished productions

A few days after National Conference leader Omar Andullah took over as Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, Bollywood film units resumed shooting to complete their unfinished productions in the Kashmir valley.

While lead actor Sanjay Dutt, Kunal Kapoor and others arrived in Srinagar on Thursday, lead female character Bipasha Basu is expected to arrive in a day or two to complete the shooting of the Rs 30-crore Lamha . The unit headed by director Rahul Dholakia had to abruptly return on November 5 last year after a mob disrupted shooting near Parimpora Sabzi Mandi on the outskirts of Srinagar.

The people, who were watching the shooting had objected to "Kashmiris being shown as weapon carriers'' in the film. Dholakia has denied the charges and said the film is "entirely pro-Kashmir'' and depict the aspirations of Kashmiris.

He had said Lamha is a love story woven with boundless agony Kashmiris are facing in the past 61 years. "Without the help of Kashmiri people I cannot do justice with my film.''

The glamorous Bipasha will play Dukhtaran-e-Millat chairperson Asiya Andrabi in Lamha, while Anupam Kher is playing the role of Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

There were protests when the director was shooting a sequence in which Kashmiri youths burn tyres and chant anti-India slogans.

Samajwadi Party's decision to field Sanjay Dutt as their Lok Sabha candidate from Lucknow

Bollywood happy with Sanju's new role

Prominent Bollywood personalities are pleased with Samajwadi Party's decision to field Sanjay Dutt as their Lok Sabha candidate from Lucknow

Bollywood on Thursday welcomed the Samajwadi Party decision to nominate Sanjay Dutt from the Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency.

Though the actor himself chose to stay mum before the legal complications were cleared, people close to him said he knew that those hurdles could be a roadblock to his political aspirations.

Actor Suniel Shetty, known to be one of Sanjay's closest friends, is not surprised at the SP decision to offer the actor a Lok Sabha ticket. He said: "I am not shocked to hear that Sanju has been offered a ticket. After whatever has happened to Mumbai on 26/11, there is definitely a need to have more people coming into politics, especially those who have a heart and think like Sanju and want to bring about change and are ready to give time for the country.''

Actor Jackie Shroff, too, feels that Sanjay has the genes in him. "He is the son of Sunil Dutt, who has given his blood and sweat and was considered the pride of the Congress. Sanju definitely has the same qualities. Besides, anybody who feels for the country should join politics and Sanju has always expressed a desire to work for people. I wish him a successful beginning like he had in his film career,'' he said.

Producer-director Mahesh Bhatt, who gave Sanju a second lease of life in the film industry (with Naam), said: "I wish my buddy nothing but the best. But let me warn him that the road ahead will be full of challenges, which he will have to negotiate alone. The world of politics is bizarre. But it's great news that two people from such an illustrious family are going to represent two different parties.'' Dutt's sister, Priya, is a Congress MP.

Producer Punkej Kharbanda, a close family friend, said, "Dutt Saab (Sunil) has taught his family to stand up and serve the people and Sanju has chosen his father's path. We require people like him who are not joining politics for making money.''

Others reacted cautiously. "I really don't know anything,'' David Dhawan, who directed Dutt in many a laugh-riot, said. "I will be able to comment only after I know about Sanjay's decision.'' Sanjay's sister, Namrata Dutt, too said, "He has not spoken to us and so I really cannot comment. Besides, I am not into politics at all.''

Sanjay Dutt chale Parliament

January 8th, 2009

Today in New Delhi, Samajwadi Party general secretary told reporters that actor Sanjay Dutt will be their party’s candidate to contest the next Lok Sabha elections from Lucknow. This announcement finally led to rest all doubts about whether or not Dutt would join politics like his late father, actor Sunil Dutt and sister, Priya Dutt, both Members of Parliament under Congress. The Lucknow constituency is presently representated by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

When asked if Dutt would be disallowed from contesting the elections because of the criminal cases against him, Amar Singh said, the party would move the Election Commission or the Supreme Court. He further added that Dutt held him like an elder brother and would do anything for him, despite not being a political person himself.

The constituency is currently represented by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Bollywood insiders are claiming it is Sanju’s jail yatra that has been instrumental in him considering becoming a politician. “He is a very changed man since the time he has come back from Yerawada prison. He has become more spiritual and is not talking movies at all.” says a close pal of the actor.

Sanjay’s sister Priya Dutt is already a Member of Parliament and represents North Mumbai constituency for Congress. She had won the same seat, earlier represented by Sanju’s dad, Sunil Dutt. Earlier it had been reported that, two years back the controversial star had a tiff with sister, Priya over standing for the by-election on their father’s seat. He was even interested that time to contest elections.

When we tried speaking Dutt’s film industry friends, they openly avoided commenting about whether he would make a good politician or would he be taken advantage off for his naivety in the dirty world of politics.
