Hrithik Roshan with his family

Hrithik Roshan is a brand unto himself: an enticing combination of star quality, a boy next door appeal and a complete gentleman. He skyrocketed to fame overnight with Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, his twinkling green eyes, winsome smile and a lean, chiseled body gathering a huge fan following.

The Complete Man
Hrithik Roshan, fondly known as Duggu by his near and dear ones, was born into a filmi family on the 10th of January, 1974. His mother is Pinky Roshan, the daughter of producer and director J.Om Prakash while his father is Rakesh Roshan, who was an actor before turning into a director, besides being the son of music director Roshan. He is the nephew of music director Rajesh Roshan. He also has a sister Sunaina.

Hrithik studied at the Bombay Scottish School, Churchgate and has a degree in commerce from Sydenham College.

Soon after his successful debut in Bollywood, he tied the knot with his childhood sweetheart Suzanne Khan, daughter of actor Sanjay Khan and sister of actor Zayed Khan. They have two sons, Hrehaan and Hridhan.

He had his bad moments after stepping into the spotlight. His father was shot by the underworld when he refused to give the foreign rights of Kaho Na Pyaar Hai. It was followed by rumours that the actor had made remarks against Nepalese which resulted in outrage against the actor in Nepal. However the actor denied it.

Hrithik is known to be a perfectionist and has worked very hard to be where he is today. He prepares himself thoroughly for every role he portrays, has trained in dance and acting besides working on his diction and his appearance. He started working out under Salman Khan’s guidance, when he worked as an assistant director on the sets of Karan Arjun and Koyla.

He got a taste of Bollywood as a child, when he appeared in the film Aasha (1980), Aapke Deewane (1980) and Bhagwan Dada (1986). But it was the year 2000 that made people sit up and take note.

A Star Is Born….
2000 Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, a love story directed by his father, in which he starred opposite newcomer Amisha Patel was an exceptional success, winning eight Filmfare awards among countless others, two of which landed with Hrithik for Best Debut and Best Actor. This was followed by Fiza with Karishma Kapoor and Jaya Bacchan, in which his portrayal the terrorist Amaan was appreciated. He played a similar role in Mission Kashmir with Preity Zinta.

2001 Yaadein with Jackie Shroff and Kareena Kapoor wasn’t a big success while Karan Johar’s family drama, the star studded Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham was an instant hit.

2002 The year saw a string of flops like Aap Mujhe Acche Lage, Na Tum Jaano Na Hum and Mujhse Dosti Karoge, making people question about whether it was downhill from here.

2003 Hrithik removed all doubts with the science-fiction film Koi Mil Gaya with Preity Zinta, in which he played the role of a mentally abnormal Rohit who befriends an alien called Jadoo. He bagged the Filmfare Best Actor award as well as the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance.

2004 Farhan Akhtar’s Lakshya did moderately well, while Hrithik’s role earned him a nomination for the Filmfare Best Actor award.

2006 He returned back as Rohit alias Krrish in Krrish, the sequel to Koi Mil Gaya, this time with Priyanka Chopra, the movie was a hit and a top earner. This was followed by the action oriented Dhoom 2, the sequel to Dhoom. He played the baddie Mr.A and won another Filmfare Best Actor award.

2008 In Ashutosh Gowariker’s Jodhaa Akbar, set in the sixteenth century, Hrithik Roshan took over as the Mughal Emperor Akbar. The film did well overseas while in India the response swung both ways.

…And Continues to Rise
2009 Hrithik will be starring in Anurag Basu’s Kites shot extensively in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New Mexico, which will mostly see light in the middle of 2009.

Biography - Abhishek Bachchan

Abhishek Bacchan, the anything but angry young man, came out of the shadows as Amitabh Bacchan’s son to build a success story in Bollywood.

His father’s son
He was born as Abhishek Amitabh Srivastav on the 5th Feb 1976 in Mumbai. What set him apart from other babies born on that day was that he was the son of superstar extraordinaire Amitabh Bacchan and actress Jaya Bacchan of the Guddi fame, who is currently a Samajwadi MP at the Rajya Sabha. He has an older sister Shweta. He’s also the grandson of Harivansh Rai Srivastav (pen-name Harivansh Rai Bacchan) who was an acclaimed poet. Both Abhishek and Amitabh took on the ‘Bacchan’ from this pen-name. Abhishek is partly Punjabi Sikh on his paternal side and a Bengali Kulin Brahmin on his maternal side.

Abhishek studied at the Jamnabhai Narsee School and Bombay Scottish School, both located in Mumbai and also Modern School in New Delhi. His college years were in Aiglon College, Switzerland amongst the cheese, clocks and banks. He moved to Boston University in U.S to study business only to return back to India to help his father with ABCL, which was hit by a financial crisis.

He was engaged to the controversially sexy Karishma Kapoor back in 2002. They went public during his father’s sixtieth birthday celebration. It lasted as long as January 2003. He got engaged to ‘the most beautiful woman on earth’ Aishwarya Rai in 2007 and tied the knot with her a few months later at the Bacchan’s residence Prateeksha.

Bacchan Jr.
Abhishek’s first film was Refugee opposite Kareena Kapoor in 2000. The film was not a blockbuster but a good debut vehicle nonetheless. He got nominated for the Filmfare Best Debut Award. His acting career dipped from here on as he went on to act in several films that didn’t boost him up to the star status enjoyed by his parents. Some of the films that he starred in between 2000 and 2003 were Dhai Akshar Prem Ke, Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya, Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai, Om Jai Jagdish and Mein Prem Ki Deewani Hoon.

Come 2004 and our boy showed that persistence pays off as he delivered some brilliant performances. In 2004, he starred in Mani Rathnam’s Yuva as a goon Lallan Singh, winning the Filmfare Best Supporting Award. He then had another major hit with Dhoom in which he played the part of ACP Jai Dixit. Another film worth taking note of in the same year was Phir Milenge, a recycled version of the Hollywood film Philadelphia revolving around AIDS. Abhishek played the lawyer Tarun Anand.

In 2005, he had a runaway hit in the comedy Bunty Aur Babli with Rani Mukerji, which had shades of the Hollywood hit Bonnie & Clyde. It was the first film where he appeared alongside his father Amitabh Bacchan. The second film with his father, Ram Gopal Verma’s political thriller Sarkar was also a major hit. Abhishek’s portrayal of Shankar Nagre won him the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award. He also did some guest appearances in films like Salaam Namaste and Neal n Nikki. He wrapped up the year with Bluffmaster with Priyanka Chopra, in which he sang the number Right Here, Right Now which was one of the top tunes of the year.

The year 2006 saw him in some of the biggest flicks of the year like Kabhie Alvida Naa Kehana that won him his third Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award. He also made a brief appearance as Sunny Kurana in the sequel Lage Raho Munna Bhai. He played Nawab Sultan Khan in Umrao Jaan with his real-life bride Aishwarya Rai. The film didn’t do as well as expected. However the sequel Dhoom 2 did a great job at the box office.

In 2007, while Jhoom Barabar Jhoom didn’t perform as well in India as overseas, he did justice to Gurukant Desai in Guru, which also starred Aishwarya Rai. The sequel Sarkar Raj, with Amitabh Bacchan and Aishwarya Rai, again pulled in the moolah at the box office. He had only two films lined up in 2008 – Drona, which was a below average performer and Dostana where he was paired opposite the hunky John Abraham.

Stay tuned
Year 2009 has Abhishek in Dilli 6 and Raavan.

Deepika Padukone sings on Indian Idol

January 6th, 2009

Deepika Padukone is the celebrity guest on Indian Idol this week. It is always a delight to meet this long legged beauty. Down to earth and a sport, she did not tire to shake a leg with the Indian Idol contestants no matter how many times she was called on stage. In fact she, like Priyanka Chopra, does not hesitate to croon whenever an opportunity arises. So she sang too and got the green signal from the judges and Annu Malek pronounced her the next Indian Idol.

Her talents do not end there. She trained in the martial arts for eight months for Chandni Chowk to China “So that the fight sequences with Akshay Kumar looked good!” On the spur of the moment she told the girls of Indian Idol, “I will show you girls a trick” and she did go up on stage and demonstrated a sleek cut so that they can defend themselves. She also learnt to speak in Chinese for the film but said she could not demonstrate that.

Watch her on Indian Idol 4 this Friday, January 9 at 9.00 pm only on Sony Entertainment Television.

Parakh Mohan on her role in Dev D

January 6th, 2009

Talking about Monica Mogre Case Files. Why Monica Mogre as a name?
Monica Mogre is just a name. I had never played a cop’s role in my life. Thanks to Zee, they fulfilled my dream of playing a cop as inspector Monica Mogre. I always wanted to play a cop’s role.

What is your role in Monica Mogre Case Files?
I play a cop in this show. It is about playing a cat and mouse chase with the criminals and risking one’s life and putting the criminals behind the bar. It is about giving justice and serving for the welfare of the society.

Shifting from Monica Mogre Case Files to Dev D. What is Dev D all about?
Dev D, as the name suggests, is the short form of Devdas and it’s a modern take on the classic love story of Devdas. I won’t say it is completely similar to Devdas, but then the basic story line and the basic characterization is the same.

Your character in the movie…
I am playing a character called Rassika which is a new character in the modern version of Devdas. This character was not there in the original Devdas. It’s Anurag Kashyap`s visualization. I portray the role of today’s girl who has been born and brought up in city and hence has a completely modern outlook towards life. She is neither a sati-savitri nor a vamp.

How it’s been working with your co-star Abhay Deol?
Working with Abhay was amazing. I mean, I have my own apprehension because Abhay is four or five films senior.

After portraying a role of a homely girl in your debut serial Saathi Re…, do you think people would accept you portraying this modern girl’s character?
See, even when I started with Saathi Re… this was what many people thought of because I was never a sati-savitri in real life. I was not the ideal Indianised bahu, also.

But then it is basically the way you carry out yourself, the way you look and how much you believe in the character and eventually people accepts you in that particular role.

How did you bag this film?
We had a normal audition and then I got a call the very next day from Anurag. He said that he wanted to meet me.

I went to his office where he informed that my audition was good and he would forward my name to the producer of UTV. The next day the UTV personal called me and said that I am on for the project.

We heard you had a steamy scene with Abhay in the movie, which you were finding it uncomfortable to shoot?
I wasn’t uncomfortable because of the steamy scene. That is ok. But the place where we were shooting was really stinking of shit. It was in a poultry farm and all that we could smell was the chicken shit. Frankly, it was the stinkiest place I have ever been to. The last thing that we had in our mind was the love making scene and we had to shoot it somehow.

You have had the opportunity of working for both big and small screens. How would you differentiate between the two?
A film on one hand is completely different. But at the same time I won’t say there is no pressure at all in films. The pressure does exist in films too, but it’s not that much as you do have time in hand. So, you can concentrate on your work.

You had some problem with Balaji for the serial named ‘Kis desh main hai mera dil’?
I was not having any problems with Balaji. They had offered me a certain character in the show, but when the shoot started I came to know that it was totally a different character. I was not comfortable with the character which they were giving me and so I backed out from the show.

Any future projects?
As of now, in television is just Monica Mogre Case Files and in cinema its Dev D. lets see how much the audience love me, accordingly I will decide on other scripts as well. I hope the audience like my performance in Dev D.

The fantasy sellers and the devoted audience, the insane love for Cinema mixed with the eccentric notion of divinity and archaic beliefs; these are the contradictions that keep this world spinning.

The stark reality of living in India juxtaposed with the fantastical world depicted on screen suddenly begins to make sense…

Sona arrives in Bombay with her dreams of becoming a film star. Wide eyed but ambitious, she does whatever it takes, to make it.

She lives on her own in a rented apartment - a luxury for most in this bustling city and spends her time with a motley crew of loyal friends whose lives are also entwined with Bollywood, each one in search of a bigger dream.

Vikram has just moved to the City leaving the comforts of his parents Delhi Home. He is a mover, he is used to getting what he wants and is smart enough to know when to demand it and when to manipulate it. He is young and handsome, and full of promise. Sona begins to enjoy Vikram’s attention and affections; they develop a romantic relationship.

Rolly is a successful though superstitious producer who only works with the biggest stars. He is making a potential blockbuster launching the nubile Nikki Khurana, the 18-year-old daughter of 70’s superstar, Neena. The hero of the film, Zaffar Khan, is Rolly’s favorite superstar. He was launched by Rolly and went on to become a huge draw at the box office.

The wheels of fate indeed continue to spin favorably for Vikram, as elsewhere in the industry, havoc spreads on the sets of producer Rommy Rolly’s new film. Vikram is called in for an audition and uses this opportunity to the fullest.

The film is about a slice of Bollywood life, in which Kismet plays a huge role. Here, notions of superstition, fate and destiny underline every life, as grand desires and opportunity converge to form strange patterns.

In such an unpredictable climate is success and failure what others define for you or is it something you decide for yourself.

Luck By Chance is a contemporary tale set in a world desperate to escape its own reality.

Diana Hayden’s all set to mentor now on ‘Miss Teen India’

January 6th, 2009

After ‘Bigg Boss 2′, Diana Hayden seems to have developed a thing for reality shows.

The latest is that she has agreed to play a mentor to young teenage girls on a new reality show.

The reality show ‘Miss Teen India’ is a talent hunt reality show where young girls are given tips and taught proper ramp behavior.

The show will take in 40 girls between the ages of 15 to 19, and Diana will be in-charge of ensuring they know how to “walk the walk and talk the talk.”

Diana has been a model, a Miss India and a Miss World and therefore she believes she will be an excellent guru to these girls.

Hopefully this new career profile helps her gain more popularity - something which has eluded her for long. Even after trying hard to make it big in Bollywood like other beauty queens and things like that.

Salman is Desperate to bounce back in 2009

January 6th, 2009

Of late things haven’t been too good for Salman Khan.

He had four flops in a row in 2008 - ‘God Tussi Great Ho’, ‘Heroes’, ‘Hello’ and ‘Yuvvraaj’. The critics and the moviegoers have been left cold.

So Sallu has apparently decided on a whole new strategy.

The guy usually keeps his professional and personal life apart and doesn’t allow even family members to interfere in his profession.

But it seems now the macho man is scared.

Reportedly he’s taking the help of his famous script writer father Salim Khan now.

He’s personally requested daddy dearest to check the scripts of the films offered to him after the big one- ‘Yuvvraaj’ flopped.

Talking with his father, a scriptwriter himself seems like a good idea. But then Salim himself hasn’t penned a god script in years. So we really don’t know if it will actually help.

Well, the guy is trying to somehow stick on as a Khan superstar. Moreover age is catching up fast, so one can very well understand.

We wonder if things will change for Sallu miya in 2009 or if he’ll continue to slog like this. This sure will be interesting to watch.

Salman and Aamir Khan are friends now?

January 6th, 2009

All know that Salman and Aamir shared a not so good rapport during their Andaaz Apna Apna days. The duo was loved in the film but never came together to give another Box Office hit. And now, suddenly after so many years in the same industry, the two Khans came together to become friends. All thanks to their passion to paint.

Interestingly, Salman, who is known to keep enemies, took the initiative to break the ice. Salman made two paintings of Aamir’s Ghajini and gifted it to him just a few days before the release of his film. Aamir was extremely touched by Salman’s gesture and in turn, gifted Salman his first self made painting on Salman’s 43rd birthday.

Reacting on this new found friendship with Aamir, Salman says, “First painting or any first thing has its emotional value. I gifted my first painting to Mr Kailash Surendra Nath because I faced camera for the very first time for his ad film. Aamir gave his first painting to me. I think every first thing is so special and close to your heart and to give that thing is a big thing.” Salman signs off.

All about ‘Naughty at 40′

January 6th, 2009

The word is that Govinda isn’t being troublesome on the sets anymore and has started shooting for director Jagmohan Mundhra’s ‘Naughty At 40′.

This kind of puts an end to the speculations that the film’s in trouble.

So does that mean that Govinda has finally decided to mend his ways?

Director Mundhra decided to make a diplomatic remark and deny the reports. He said, “It was never Govinda’s fault that the shooting had halted. We had some production problems which have now been sorted out. Govinda has never been troublesome. For a 3 p.m. shift he arrives at 2.30 p.m.”

Maybe he wants to make sure that Govinda doesn’t turn naughty, play truant and trouble him like he troubles other producers. He said it’s high time the industry realised that they are in the throes of a recession.

He explained, “Actors within the industry have realized it and are working accordingly. There are reports of how Govinda has been troubling my project ‘Naughty At 40′. But the truth is that the project being in trouble has nothing to do with Govinda. On the contrary, he has been unfailingly disciplined and punctual. The days of stretching a film and its budget are over. Stars now need to cut their prices and give their dates at a stretch. It’s the only way.”

Currently the shooting is on in Punjab. The shoot will be on for 25 days after which the film will be complete.

Of course it will be, provided moody Govinda understands too and doesn’t change his mind again.

Maa to debut on Zee TV

January 6th, 2009

Zee TV announces the launch of ‘Maa’, a story about the struggles of three siblings who suddenly find themselves stripped of the shade and protection of their mother’s caring arms. Sacrifice, care, warmth, patience, tolerance, tenderness, shelter, etc come together to form the perfect image of a Mother who stands in the face of challenges in life. Destiny intervenes and separates the mother and children from each other. ‘Maa’ is about this very severing of the maternal bond and the tribulations that arise thereof. The show debuts on 12th January 2009 and is scheduled from Mon-Fri at 7.00pm.

Maa replaces ‘Vivaah’ on this time slot.
Speaking on the launch, Zee TV Business Head Mr. Tarun Mehra said, “The channel has made successful shows with various subjects like social issues, political stigmas, paranormal forces, mythology and comedy but a topic like this was never touched before with such depth. We thought of starting the New Year with a propitious subject. The word ‘Maa’ spells purity and piety. The story is a mother’s description of her trials and endeavors to create a happy family; the story of the children’s suffering when they realize that they have been separated from their mother. The character of Maa is being essayed by Chitrapama who makes her comeback to the small screen after a hiatus of 6 years. She was earlier seen in shows like Thodi si bewafai, Kamini Damini, the popular movie Deewanapan and also was the lead in a Tamil movie. We have Amar Upadhyay playing her husband and three young kids, again popular faces on Indian television, Aditi, Shyam and Hirak who form the Bharadwaj family based out of Mumbai.”

Adding further he said, “Our byline reads, ‘Dhoop mein thandi chaav’ and literally translates to a mothers caring hand in the face of adversity. The timeslot for the show is from Monday-Friday at 7pm and is meant to strengthen our prime time.”

Story
The show is about Apara’s tirade against society and her three children’s suffering in the light of the fact that they are separated from her safety. Circumstances force Apara and her children to seek refuge in another house and how she overcomes the obstacles and tries to come out unscathed and unmarred, at the same time not letting go of her family’s honor.

Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai to debut on STAR Plus

January 6th, 2009

After capturing the viewers’ attention with the extraordinary telly-drama Sapana Baabul Ka…Bidaai, the No 1 Hindi General Entertainment Channel in India, STAR Plus extends its fiction line-up on the prime-time with Dabur Vatika Hair Oil’s Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai. Produced by Rajan Shahi’s Director’s Kut Production, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai is a story of love finding its way after an arranged marriage and how two people bond and blossom together after entering into sacred ties of matrimony. Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai - the show presented by STAR Plus premiers on January 12 at 9.30 pm, will act as a balm to present day breakdowns in relationships.

Intertwined with Indian culture, tradition, ethics and simplicity, the story resonates with STAR Plus’s ideology of building family values in a society that is witnessing rapid breakdowns in its cultural fabric. Recognizing the increasingly fragile nature of relationships in contemporary India, the show seeks to create a milieu of understanding, communication and love between a couple who were virtually strangers before they tie the knot. In its own simple way, Yeh Rishta Kya Kya Kehlata Hai seeks to re-establish traditional marital ties to strengthen the fabric of Indian society.

Commenting on this show, Senior Creative Director, Vivek Bahl, said, “Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai seeks to build the concept of love within the traditional setting of an arranged marriage. It creates a quintessential contrast to the world around us where marriages, once considered sacrosanct in our society, are losing their sanctity and turning into relationships of convenience. STAR Plus is the epitome of a family channel upholding the tenets of a values-based society and is reflected in Akshara’s trials, tribulations and evolution from a young girl to a responsible member of a family in the show.”

The story revolves around Akshara a shy, demure, obedient daughter who has been brought up like a princess in a traditional Marwari family. She has a very protective upbringing and has only experienced relationships that emanate love and protection. She is yet to discover a life beyond her over-protective mother or her disciplinarian father or her witty and loving grandmother.

Soon comes the desired moment of marriage for Akshara and she experiences emotions beyond those that she is familiar with. Marriage catapults her into a plethora of new relationships, new emotions and a whole new environment. But most importantly, she discovers a unique relationship called LOVE, which eventually helps her stride through all trials and tribulations. The story is her journey from being the ideal daughter to a person striving hard to understand her new situation to ultimately move towards falling in love with her husband. – Dabur Vatika Hair Oil Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai is a saga of an adolescent heart transforming into a mature one with desires and hopes that are in tune with her new life.

While Hina Khan as Akshara will take the viewers through her journey of maturing from a naïve 21 year old to a responsible and mature woman, veterans like Vinita Malik, Sanjeev Seth, Lata Sabharwal and Amardeep Jha will engage them with their entertaining and effortless acting.

SRK’s looking for cheerleaders trough TV show ‘Knights Angels’

Crrently SRK’s busy looking for cheerleaders for the Indian Premier League (IPL) team.

Looks like after a short appearance in his home production ‘Billo Barber’, SRK is relatively free to do other things!

Shah Rukh’s Red Chillies Entertainment is producing a TV show to do the same. The show will air on NDTV Imagine.

‘Knights & Angels’ will be the first ever-televised hunt for cheerleaders and will have other popular stars helping with the proceedings.

The buzz is that the star will pick six cheerleaders for his Kolkata Knight Riders for the upcoming second season with the help of the show.

Apparently he’s looking for style, personality, attitude, rhythm and a fit body in the cheerleaders.

Maybe he thinks having proper cheerleaders and creating a hue and cry about their selection would help him win the tournament. We think selecting the proper players and pepping them up was far more important. Something which he so failed to do in the first season!
